Etsy Listing Optimization Guide: Every Field, Field by Field

Photos

You get 10 photo slots. Use all 10. Etsy's algorithm doesn't read photos for ranking, but photos drive click-through rate and conversion, which drive ranking.

Photo order that converts:

  1. Hero photo. Product centered, neutral background, real scale cue (a hand, a coin, a candle for size).
  2. Lifestyle photo. Product in use, in real light, with mood.
  3. Detail shot. Texture, stitch, material clarity.
  4. Variation grid. All colors or sizes in one image.
  5. Scale photo. Product next to a familiar object.
  6. Packaging. What it arrives in.
  7. Process shot. A glimpse of how it's made. 8–10. Spec graphics. Dimensions, materials, care instructions as graphics.

Video

Add a 5–15 second video. Etsy displays video as the cover on mobile, and listings with video convert 5–15% higher in most categories.

Title

The title is your single biggest SEO lever. Structure:

Primary Keyword | Secondary Keyword | Occasion or Personalization Hook

Example: Personalized Leather Wallet for Men | Monogrammed Bifold | Groomsmen Gift Idea

Rules:

  • Front-load the most important phrase.
  • Stay under 140 characters; first 60 carry the most weight.
  • Use the buyer's natural phrasing, not your brand voice.
  • Pipes, dashes, or commas as separators — Etsy treats them as breaks.

Category

Choose the deepest accurate category. "Jewelry > Necklaces > Pendants" outranks just "Jewelry." Categories feed Etsy's attribute system, which feeds the candidate pool.

Attributes

Fill every attribute — color, material, occasion, style, room, holiday. Each attribute is a free ranking signal. Sellers who skip attributes lose 10–25% of their potential reach.

Renewal options

Auto-renew on. Cost is $0.20 every 4 months per listing or per sale. The traffic it generates more than covers the fee for any decent listing.

Type / Description

If digital, choose Digital. If physical, choose Physical. Switching later resets some listing data.

Description

Etsy does not heavily weight description text for ranking. It heavily weights it for conversion. Structure:

  • Hook (1–2 sentences). What this is, who it's for.
  • Bullets (5–7). Specs, materials, dimensions, customization options.
  • Process (2–3 sentences). How it's made, how long it takes.
  • Shipping & policies (2 sentences). Production time, shipping options.
  • CTA (1 sentence). "Message me for custom orders" or similar.

The above-the-fold portion (first 3 lines on mobile) does the heavy lifting. Lead with the most concrete buyer benefit.

Section

Assign every listing to a shop section. Sections show as filters on your shop page and improve buyer browse-through.

Tags

Materials

Up to 13 materials. Use real materials buyers search for ("solid brass," "linen," "recycled cotton"), not vague terms ("metal," "fabric").

Honest disclosure here protects your shop from policy strikes.

Price

Etsy's algorithm doesn't reward "cheapest" — it rewards "best converting at price point." That means a $45 listing at 8% conversion outranks a $25 listing at 1.5%. Don't race to the bottom.

Quantity

For made-to-order, keep quantity high (10+). Low quantity ("only 1 left!") helps urgency but hurts ad performance.

Variations

Use variations for color, size, personalization. Each variation should have linked photos and an SKU. Variations with linked photos convert ~20% higher.

Personalization

If your listing is personalized, turn on personalization with a clear prompt: "Enter the name (max 12 characters)." Listings with personalization rank well in gift-occasion searches.

Shipping

  • Use shipping profiles, not per-listing shipping.
  • Offer free shipping where possible (Etsy boosts free shipping in US for orders $35+).
  • Be honest about production time. Late shipments hurt your shop quality score for months.

After listing

Within 24 hours:

  • Pin the listing to Pinterest with 3 fresh image designs.

Within 7 days:

  • Check first-photo CTR.
  • Check view-to-favorite ratio.
