Etsy Tags That Actually Matter (And the Ones Wasting Your Slots)
Etsy gives you 13 tag slots. Most sellers waste at least half. Here's how to use every one.
Etsy tags are the most over-debated and under-understood field in the entire listing form. You get 13 slots, 20 characters each, and they are easily 40% of your ranking signal. Yet most sellers fill them with single words, synonyms, or duplicates of phrases already in the title.
This guide walks through the tag rules that actually move rank, with examples.
What a tag really is
A tag is a multi-word search phrase you predict a buyer will type. Etsy matches a buyer's query against the union of your title and tags. If the buyer's phrase appears (in order, or as a close variant) in any tag, you're in the candidate pool.
Key implication: a tag with one word is a wasted slot. "Necklace" by itself matches nothing your title doesn't already cover.
The 7 rules of effective tags
1. Use all 13 slots, every time
A listing with 8 tags is competing with one hand tied behind its back. Always fill all 13.
2. Use multi-word phrases
Each tag should be 2–4 words. Examples for a personalized leather wallet:
- personalized leather wallet
- mens leather wallet gift
- monogrammed wallet for dad
- groomsmen leather wallet
3. Don't repeat phrases already in your title
If your title is Personalized Leather Wallet for Men, don't burn a tag on "personalized leather wallet." That phrase is already indexed via your title. Use the tag slot for a different phrasing.
4. Avoid plurals and singulars of the same phrase
Etsy treats them as equivalent. "Leather wallet" and "leather wallets" do not need separate tags.
5. Don't use single-word tags unless absolutely necessary
The exception: a niche material or technique ("scrimshaw," "kintsugi") buyers genuinely search alone.
6. Match buyer language, not your branding
Buyers don't search "luxe equine talisman." They search "horse necklace gift." Use the language they use.
7. Mirror tags across photos for attribute alignment
Etsy uses tags + attributes (color, material, occasion) to assemble the candidate pool. Tag phrases that align with the attributes you've already chosen reinforce relevance.
Long-tail vs short-tail tags
You want a mix:
- 3–4 long-tail tags (4 words, very specific intent): "monogrammed wallet for groomsmen"
- 6–7 mid-tail tags (2–3 words, moderate volume): "leather wallet gift"
- 2–3 broad tags (2 words, high volume): "leather wallet"
Long-tail tags convert better. Broad tags expand reach. Mid-tail tags are the workhorse.
Seasonal and occasion tags
Etsy weighs occasion tags differently during seasonal windows. Two months before Father's Day, switching one tag to "father's day gift" can spike impressions. Set a calendar reminder to swap occasion tags 6–8 weeks before each major gifting moment. For more seasonal tactics, read How to Get More Etsy Traffic.
Misused tag slots — what to remove tonight
Walk through any listing and remove tags that match this pattern:
- Single-word tags
- Misspellings (Etsy auto-corrects most)
- Tags that duplicate phrases verbatim from the title
- Tags with branding ("MyShopName wallet")
- Vague adjectives without a noun ("beautiful," "amazing")
Each removed tag is a free slot for a real phrase.
How to find tag ideas
- Type your seed phrase into Etsy search and note the autocomplete suggestions.
- Scroll to the bottom of search results for "Explore related searches."
- Use eRank or Marmalead to surface phrasing variants and their search volume.
- Check competitor listings — but don't copy. Adapt.
- Use Pinterest's search bar for inspirational variants buyers also type into Etsy.

Tag refresh cadence
Refresh tags every 30–45 days on listings that are underperforming. Don't refresh winners — if a listing is selling, leave it alone. The most common mistake is over-editing what's already working.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use the same tags on every listing?+
No. Each listing should have tags specific to its variations and use cases. Repeating identical tags wastes the algorithm's ability to differentiate your products.
Do tags have to be in English?+
Tags should match the language of your shop. If your shop is set to English, write English tags. Etsy translates titles automatically but not tags.
What's the character limit per tag?+
20 characters including spaces.
Can I use commas inside a tag?+
No. Each tag is a separate phrase. Commas would just consume characters.
How often should I update my tags?+
Every 30–45 days on underperformers, and 6–8 weeks before seasonal events on relevant listings. Don't touch winners.
